How to style a white shirt

A white shirt three ways: tucked into a midi skirt, layered for the weekend and sharpened for work, with tips on fit and tucking.

By Style the Rest · Updated · 3 outfits

A crisp white shirt is a wardrobe classic because it works like a blank canvas. It can look sharp and professional or relaxed and undone depending on how you wear it.

Most of the styling comes down to two decisions: how you tuck it, and what you pair it with below the waist.

3 ways to wear white shirt

Office, lunches, events

Polished Midi

Black and white is timeless. A fluid satin skirt against crisp cotton gives a pleasing contrast of textures, and the belt defines the waist.

Tip Tuck the shirt fully into the skirt and blouse it out very slightly so it moves with you.

Weekends, travel, coffee dates

Relaxed Weekend

An oversized shirt over straight jeans is the easiest smart-casual outfit there is. Tan leather warms the cool blues and whites.

Tip Try a front tuck: tuck just the middle of the hem to show your waist without losing the relaxed shape.

The rules

  • Fit is everything: shoulder seams on your shoulders, buttons lying flat with no pulling.
  • Thicker cotton (poplin, oxford) looks crisper and is less see-through than thin shirting.
  • Roll sleeves to just below the elbow for a relaxed look; keep them down and buttoned for work.
  • Wear a skin-tone layer underneath rather than white, which shows through.

Skip these

  • Creased or limp collars
  • Visible bright underwear beneath a thin shirt
  • Very tight shirts that gape at the buttons
